President's Message - September 2022

Dear Fellow PPP-RI Friends,

Welcome to the start of a new academic year! It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the 2022-2023 President of the Board of Directors for PPP-RI.  I look forward to the opportunity to work alongside this year’s board to provide meaningful content both virtually and in person. An overarching theme for the year will focus on Planned Giving 101.  With the rise of small nonprofits and fundraising professionals wearing multiple hats, we saw a need to provide content that speaks just as much to our rising stars as our seasoned veterans. I believe you will find that this year’s calendar is balanced for professionals in all stages of their career.

New this year, we will be offering a virtual “Coffee & Conversation” that will be free and open to members and non-members alike. The goal of these Zoom hosted events is to offer an open platform that encourages conversation, networking, and learning among planned giving professionals and our allied members in the field. We encourage you to invite a friend, a colleague, or even your boss to attend.  It will be a great way to showcase what we do, and potentially attract new members.

Attracting new members is the focus of the board for ’22 - ’23. One of the lasting impacts of COVID-19 was the decline in membership since 2020. As a board, we look forward to working with our current members to invite our peers to join us and work to grow our membership numbers together. One small way to help with this is to make sure you are a member of our LinkedIn page and be sure to invite your fellow colleagues.

New this year, we will be rolling out a PPP-RI “Google Group”.  This will function as a listserv in which members can pose questions, solicit feedback on a process or introduce themselves and their work. We feel that this will be a great benefit to our members and will allow for an increase in networking and idea sharing.

A cornerstone of PPP-RI has long been our in-person networking and I am thrilled to announce that this year we will be back in person.  Alicia Anthony, PPP-RI VP and her team have assembled a robust calendar for the year. Please visit pppri.org for an up to date calendar of events.

We are proud to offer you an opportunity to attend this year’s National Association Charitable Gift Planners conference with a complimentary registration, flights, hotel and meals via the Alan Axelrod Scholarship. Please visit our Alan Axelrod Scholarship page to apply for a scholarship and to be considered among the recipients attending the in-person conference in October.

If you are interested in supporting the scholarship with a financial contribution, please use the online donation form on the scholarship page.  As a reminder, this scholarship is funded by donations from PPP-RI members and is for the betterment of our members as we grow professionally and personally.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at rferrell@uri.edu with any questions or thoughts.  I’d love to hear from you!

Best regards,

Robert Ferrell, President, Board of Directors
